The Spanish also invaded Indiana during this time, but they were defeated by American forces at Battle of Tippecanoe in November of that year. In 1821, Congress passed an act giving land to each town within ten miles of any major river or sea on the United States northwest frontier for settlement with no restrictions on lot size or location. The towns chosen for this program were Lima, Vincennes, Greenfield Village (later Terre Haute), Crawfordsville, Notre Dame de l’Eau (later Danville), Stephenson’s Point (later Terre Haute) and Perrysburg (which became Peoria). Dyer was selected for its location on the Monon Road between Chicago and Indianapolis – perfect for wagon traffic carrying goods overland from Ohio toIndiana via Indy Bayou before shipping downriver to Chicago arriving via Decatur Street on Illinois soil.) In 1830., a party led by General David Dixon crossed through Indiana into Illinois on their way northward to join General Harrison’s army fighting against British regulars at Waterloo; they left behind two hundred pioneers including many women who started a successful agricultural enterprise called “Dixon's Prairie Colony." This new community soon numbered 1,000 people when doors opened up for white immigrants seeking land grants east of the Great Lakes starting around 1830-35 when state legislatures approved legislation admitting these particular groups without providing specific acreage limits or other requirements such as industry or population density which would have discouraged early settler arrivals like those from Ohio headed towards central Illinois Territory where transportation links existed then easier access to markets awaited them
