There has been a long and varied history of firearms in the town of Dyer, Indiana. The first Assault Rifle to be produced in Dyer was the M1A3 Thompson rifle which entered service with the United States Army in 1955. Dyers gun shop began serving customers from afar back in 1875 when local resident John Aiken set up his own Shotgun Shop on Main Street just northwest of town limits. In 1892, John’s son-in-law Sam Stevens opened his own Shotgun Store next door to John’s shop while also running his restaurant across the street from it. Over time these businesses grew into their current form with SamStevens retiring in 1957 as owner/operator of both stores until his death eight years later at age 87 years old*. As more people moved into this area, various industries started up including Agriculture, Manufacturing (including tanning), Mining (including coalmining), Printing & Publishing, retail trade/ services (such as grocery stores) and agriculture (which included raising cattle). Today's economy is dominated by technology companies such as Intel and Amazon Web Services with some smaller businesses still active here including real estate agents and car dealerships along with some light manufacturing activity such as fabricated metal fabrication etcetera. The community has seen many changes over the years including becoming more diverse with residents coming from all over America; however, most residents remain friendly and welcoming despite these recent arrivals.

A flour mill was built in 1834 and a cotton gin in 1840. By 1850, there were over 100 businesses operating in Dyer. In 1860, a railroad was constructed through Dyer and the town grew rapidly. By 1870, there were over 300 residents living in Dyer with a total population of 3200 people. The growth of the city caused problems for local officials as they had to provide enough housing for everyone while also providing enough transportation to keep everyone connected to their homes and businesses. By 1880, most of the businesses had closed down and only nine residents remained living in Dyer with a total population of 1800 people. The city declined after that point and by 1915 it had become an agricultural community once again
Dyer was founded in 1824 by John Dyer. The town has been settled since the early 1800s and is home to a number of historic buildings, including the United States Post Office building, the old courthouse, and the Methodist Church.
