Dyer, Indiana is a town in Wexford County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. Dyer is located on the eastern side of Wexford County and is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dyer was founded in 1837 by John Dyer and his wife Anna Maria. The original home of John and Anna Dyer is now a museum in the town. The first land grant to John Dyer was in 1796 from President George Washington. By 1800, John had started trading goods with other communities in this area and it was determined that he needed a store for these purposes. He bought three lots on the south side of State Road 6 near present-day downtown Dyersburg. On July 3, 1821, he opened his store at 9th Street and Old National Road (now US 36). In 1830 he built a new house on lot 5 which still stands today as the old courthouse building next door to current day dining hall within city limits of Terre Haute. This house served as both tavern/restaurant business place where clients could dine while awaiting their court appearances as well as government office until 1906 when it became an annex to county jail during prohibition time period! John's son James Wafer served two terms (1836-38) as mayor of Terre Haute before becoming U.S. Representative from Indiana's 8th district (southwest Indianapolis). Another son James Wafer Jr., born November 12, 1842 graduated from Purdue University Law School in 1865 and practiced law in Terre Haute for many years before dying December 2nd 1966 unmarried at age 78 years old after only 54 years legal practice! His brother William Hafer also practiced law here for many years prior to moving to Colorado Springs CO where he died January 15th 1979 aged 88 years old! AnnaMaria (John) passed away October 20th 1886 just 10 days short of her 100th birthday!!! At age 101 she married retired Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest who preceded her into eternity!!! It truly must have been quite an honor having such an esteemed ancestor associated with your community(s)!
