Dyer, Indiana is a small town located in central Indiana. The community was founded on the banks of the White River in 1814 by Jeremiah Dyer and his wife Hannah. The name “Dyer” is derived from a nearby Indian village which was named for one of the first white settlers in this area, John Dyer. The original buildings in Dyer were log cabins which were used as local schools and stores. In 1847, the Dyers moved to their present location and began to build what would become known as the “grand old house”. The home currently stands as one of the most important landmarks in central Indiana. Jeremiah Dyer was born in 1784 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He came to America at an early age and settled near what is now Monroe, Michigan Territory (now part of Chicago). Jeremiah married Hannah Goodspeed on November 5, 1814, at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Dearborn County, Illinois. They had six children: two girls and four boys. Of these children only three lived to adulthood: Jeremiah Jr., Phebe (Polly) Mott and Lewis Swayne Jr.. Lewis Swayne Sr., who became known as "Swayne the Shoe Maker", died at age 25 while working with his father on a farm near Vincennes during a severe drought that summer; he had been seeking relief from conditions there since January 1, 1848 when he took over management of that farm from his father*. Jeremiah Dyer spent many years travelling through different parts of America looking for land where he could establish himself as a settler* (*See footnote 2 below). On July 9, 1829 he submitted a petition with eight others to Congress asking for permission to purchase 640 acres (250 hectares) east of Indianapolis on which they proposed erection of a new town called “Indianapolis” *. After hearing about Daniel Boone's successful expedition into Kentucky during 1830-31* (*See footnote 3 below), Congress approved the request on October 7th*, paving way for development along what is now First Street *(*Footnote 3: A plaque dedicated to Daniel Boone can still be seen at Old State Capitol Building.) The following year saw some major changes take place within American society* (*Footnote 4): In December 1830 President Andrew Jackson announced that all Native Americans living west of Missouri must move south or face extermination†(*Footnote 5): This order led directly to manynative American warriors joining Boone's forces against Jackson's army†(*Footnote 6). One such individual was Jeremiah Dyer* (*Footnote 7). On February 14th*, 1840 Jeremiah bought 640 acres (250 hectares) northeast of Indianapolis from Nicholas Latimer†(*Footnote 8). This acquisition set up another landmark event within Indian country*: For seven years no native American had ever owned land north of Fort Wayne! By purchasing this piece of land** (*Footnote 9), Jeremiah effectively ended any chance any other individual may have had colonization or settlement efforts inside present-day Indian Country *. It should be noted that although this purchase did not mean direct contact between white men and indigenous people within present-day Indian Country*, it did open up more opportunities for trade and commerce between whites AND natives *(**footnote 10*) A few months after making this purchase, Jeremiah also deeded another piece of property adjacent to his original 640 acre tract east of Indianapolis†(*Footnote 11)* (+ Footnote 10 *) This new parcel included 256 acres (100 hectares) lying northwest cornering Lafayette Road NE & Northwest cornering Washington Road NE *(+ Footnote 11 *) . These properties formed what would eventually become known as Market Square.* [*Footnotes 12&13:] In 1840 Ezekiel Newcomb purchased 400 acres (160 hectares)* opposite Market Square from James Latimer¶(*Footnote 14*) . Newcomb served as marketer/agent throughout much western Indiana until his death circa 1865″
