Crown Point, Indiana is a small town in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Indiana. It was founded in 1825 by James K. Crown and his wife Elizabeth as a fur trading post on the edge of what is now Terre Haute, Ind., about 25 miles (40 km) south of Indianapolis. The first settler in Crown Point was John Stephenson, who arrived in 1827 and built a log cabin on the banks of the White River. The town grew rapidly after it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1850s and 1860s because of its location near points where slaves could be bought and sold. In 1875, Crown Point became one of several towns annexed by Indianapolis; however, it remained an important community until after World War II when it declined significantly due to loss of jobs in manufacturing and other industries. Near Crown Point he destroyed villages which had been occupied by Chief Tecumseh's people after they had raided local farms supplies for food2 In 1830–31 Henry Clay campaigned unsuccessfully for election as U.S. Senator from Kentucky against Andrew Jackson while living at Scottsbluff (now Scottsburg) just east of Crown Point3 There are several accounts that claim that Indian fighters killed or captured many white men and boys traveling along the Kiskaskia River4 On October 5th1832 Solomon Grundy married Sarah Phelps at Greenville Church5 near present day Old Mound Road west of CrownPoint6 It was not until 1840–41 when large amounts of gold were discovered at Crystal City near Terre Haute7 that Canada began offering land grants to U.S citizens for settlement8 This led to an influx of immigrants into Indiana beginning about 18409 Many new settlers originated from New England10 By 1850 there were over 10 thousand residents living in Crown Point11 The following year an act was passed Congress making crown point an incorporated town12 . On December 14th1851 Samuel Colt traveled through central Illinois visiting various towns before returning to Indianapolis where he organized a revolver manufactory13 .
