Crown Point, Indiana is a small town in Evans County,Indiana. The population was 1,887 at the 2000 census. The area now known as Crown Point was settled in 1814 by Captain John C. Caldwell and his family when they moved from Kentucky to the present-day Evans County site. In 1827, the Caldwells erected a small cabin on what is now east side of Main Street near where US 127 crosses it today. In 1846, Captains James Wherry and Joshua Slocum built a cabin on land that forms the eastern edge of present day Crown Point. A year later they donated their excess lumber to build a stockade around their new home which served as rifle range and shooting ground for local farmers and hunters for many years. In 1853, Major General David Hunter purchased about eighty acres of land west of Crown Point from Captain Caldwell for $2 per acre. This donation marked the beginning of what would become one of America’s most important Rifle Ranges – the Indiana Rifle Range (IRR). Many famous shooters including Samuel Colt used this range during early nineteenth century gunfights throughout Indiana and neighboring states such as Ohio and Illinois. The IRR remains an important shooting venue to this day with over 2 million rounds fired through its metal gratings each year! Over two hundred different firearms have been used heretofore in NRA competitions statewide! During World War II, it served as a military base for both United States Marine Corps operations on land and naval vessels based at nearby Lake Michigan Naval Base. After World War II ended in 1945, crown point experienced rapid growth as businesses moved out of town and people moved into new housing developments such as White Sands Manor. Since then there has been little change to crown point's demography or economic status; however it remains an important cultural center with many popular annual events throughout the year.
