The name "Crown Point" comes from the Potawatomi word "kīnāpti", meaning "fortress." The first settlers in the area were French Canadians who arrived in 1765 and named their new land la Rivière-du-Loup after the Iroquois word for "the river of wolves". The first shooting range in CrownPoint was built on Municipal Road by Captain John Puckett in 1892. It consisted of a small lot next to his home and measured only 100 yards long by 25 yards wide. By 1903, there were two ranges open to the public: one on State Street south of town and another at the bank of the White River just outside town. In 1923, CrownPoint's first air rifle range opened with facilities that included a club house and 11 shooting lanes measuring 125 feet by 25 feet each. In 1951, a 200-yard indoor pistol range was added to provide competition for local high school athletes. That same year saw the opening of an outdoor rifle range that continued until it closed its doors in 1978 due to lack of use. A rifle range reopened later that same year but it also closed within a few years due to lack of funding. In 1984, an 800-yard indoor target practice facility was built adjacent to municipal golf Course which remained operational until 2000 when it was sold off and converted into apartments. In 2001, when CrownPoint incorporated as a city Limits (an entity separate from LaPorte County), it embarked upon an ambitious project called Gateway Project which aimed to bring about comprehensive reclamation of downtown streetscape including removal of all remaining streetlights along 2 blocks thereof between State Street/Wabash Avenue and Government Center Drive/Harrison Avenue; replacement or reconstruction of sidewalks on 10 blocks within that radius; installation or rehabilitation of lighting along those streets; creation or expansion of parking meters throughout downtown; erection or renovation/installationof several buildings within downtown limits; and improvement/additionto existing infrastructure such as roads (including resurfacing) as needed.. As part as Gateway Project goals were expanding access to affordable housing while creating more jobs opportunities for locals through various economic development initiatives such as job fairs hosted throughout downtown every fall semester.; these job fairs featured representatives from various businesses located inside and outside downtown limits., increasein business activity led eventually to increased foot traffic by visitors during daytime hours., this increased foot traffic then resulted in more money being generated for local businesses thru advertising revenuegenerated thru visitsto those businesses.; finally given enough time through marketing efforts like event sponsorships etc., crownpoint became known nationwide as "The City That Can't Stop Shooting" thanks primarily theretofore unknown demographics who frequented its many popular tourist destinations like Fort Wayne International Airport;; these tourists brought money back home which helped spur other economic development initiatives such as increasing nightlife activities inside city limits.; furthermore numerous events have been staged annually throughout Downtownlimits since 2001 including music festivals!
