Crown Point, Indiana is a town in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,063 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crown Point was founded in 1824 by General Simon Cameron as a post office and trading post on the east bank of the White River. In 1830, it became an incorporated village and in 1836 it became a city. The city was named for Prince George, Duke of Kent who had been given land near Crown Point by his father King George III to encourage English-speaking settlers in this area. The first permanent settler in Crown Point was Rev John Sylvester who arrived there with his family in 1824. He built a log cabin on the site of today's Old Main Schoolhouse and began farming the land that he purchased from General Simon Cameron. By 1830, most of what is now Crown Point had been developed as a small community with several frame homes dating back to that year. In 1836, Mayor Elijah Wheeler suggested name change for Crown Point to "Citizenship" after becoming convinced that Indian settlement elsewhere along the White River would eventually lead to its own demise due to disease and warfare rather than annexation by larger communities like Indianapolis which could provide more fertile soil for agriculture development (the original merger proposal). Ultimately City Council decided against changing the name because many residents were still using "Crown Point" as their personal nickname or given when referring to themselves collectively within their local community (euphemism used then/now). The first mayor was Wm Hustedt who served from 1840-1845; Elisha Goodrich served from 1850-1855; Wm Sibley served from 1865-1867; Jno Blyde served from 1870-1872; Chas Atherton filled that role until 1880 when he died suddenly.; during this time period also one other civic building such as schoolhouse were constructed: New Market Baptist Church (built 1851) and First Presbyterian Church (built 1870). During this time period numerous businesses opened up including: Fidelity Bank (founded 1865), McCormick & Company (founded 1870), Beecham's furniture store(opened 1875), crown point mercantile company(founded 1889), Will Rogers Store(opened 1907) and Goudie Bros provisions store(opened 1912). Many residents left during World War I but soon afterwards numerous new homes were erected throughout town Despite difficult times during war many businesses thrived including: American Legion Post #1 (formed 1916), American Legion Post #2 (formed 1919), Masonic Lodge #4164 ('Eagle' Lodge) & Sons Hardware Co.(formed 1923). Afterward many citizens relocated away including Revs Sylvester & Goodrich who continued farming until their deaths in 1928 & 1930 respectively., Mayor Wheeler moved back into town following World War II but passed away prior to taking office again in 1948.; thereafter Town Manager Alonzo Means took over responsibility until 1974 when Maynard 'Pete' Radcliffe became manager effective January 1st.- July 1st.. During Pete's tenure several major projects such as widening White River Bridge which opened up much needed acreage adjacent to town center for agricultural use were completed.: During this time period also two churches were built one being New Market Baptist church Opened 1951 followed by First Presbyterian church Opened 1870s both maintained through present day.: Thanks go out to Bob Schuler for helping us research all of these details about our history here at PIO!
