Crown Point was one of the first cities in Indiana to pioneer the use of electric lights. In 1881, the first lightbulbs were installed in a building on the corner of State and Union Streets. Crown Point is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crown Point was founded on November 12, 1811 by Captain George Stephenson and his men as a stopping point on their way to Fort Wayne. The first settlers were mostly Creek Indians working for the local landowner, George Tate. In 1814, Indian fighter Black Hawk attacked Crown Point and killed three white men and one native American. This event forever changed Crown Point's reputation as a hotbed of Native American activity in central Indiana. After this attack, General James Kintigh built Fort Dearborn just outside of town to monitor Indian activity in central Indiana. In 1831, King Louis IX of France granted land to John Pope in what is now known asPope Township. Pope set out to populate the area with French Canadians he had recruited during the Mexican–American War and he named his township after himself: "Pope Township" stands today as an reminder of this early effort by Pope to establish French Canadian settlement in central Indiana. In 1830-31, residents of Crown Point petitioned Congress for statehood; they received word back from Washington that they would not be added to the new United States until AFTER Louisiana had become a state! A group of Dutch farmers who arrived shortly afterwards decided that they too would like to become Americans and moved into crownpoint proper from other parts of centralIndiana around this time (the first wave). The Panic Of 1893 destroyed much business in CrownPoint so many people left during that time which made it difficult for businesses such as grocery stores etc.). Many seamen used Crownpoint as their final stop before sailing home due its good harbor conditions plus there was always potential work available aboard ships at anchor or while ashore when visiting friends or family members on shore leave (a common pastime among sailors during those days). As more people moved into crownpoint proper during the late 1800s & early 1900s various mercantile businesses popped up including several banks/credit unions which still operate today including First National Bank & Trust Company - one of only two remaining original banks west of Interstate 65 located within city limits! At about this time too “the nightingale” began making her nightly rounds over open air speakers throughout downtown – she signaled arrivals & departures from many vessels dockside providing valuable information about fishing grounds & shipping routes nearby! By 1916 there were several large hotels/motels catering largelyto military personnel stationed nearby but economy has been struggling ever since (& still isn’t back where it once was) wink wink
