Crown Point, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Vigo County. The population was 27,866 at the 2010 census. It is located on the St. Joseph River at its confluence with the Danube River. Crown Point is home to two major industries: agriculture and shipbuilding. The city has been called "the second largest port on the Danube" because of its location along that river's main shipping route. The first settlers in Crown Point were Frenchmen who went to live in what is now Fort Wayne when that area was part of France under King Louis XIV in 1679-1680. They named their town after François de La Motte, captain general of Canada who had fought for France against Great Britain during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). In 1792, Crown Point became part of United States under President George Washington as part of territory acquired from France by way of the Louisiana Purchase (1803). A smallpox epidemic that year killed many people in Crown Point, but it was soon forgotten about since most residents were engaged in farming or fishing or commerce related activities such as trade with other parts of America or Europe. In 1854, steamboats began flowing downriver from Superior to Crown Point carrying passengers and cargo; this started a long running commercial relationship between crown point and Superior which continues to this day! In 1875–76, American engineers built a large wharffront warehouse complex at what is now downtown Crown Point on High Street which served as an important staging ground during World War I for munitions production by General Motors Corporation and other companies dealing with war materials inland from Detroit! During Prohibition (1912-1921), CrownPoint was one of several towns across central Indiana affected by enforcement efforts led by local government officials seeking to enforce prohibition laws through such measures as curbside patrols and administrative citation procedures invoking state law governing intoxicating liquors! In 1827, when James Krieger surveyed land for a new town in this area, he named it Crown Point after his home state of New York. In 1836-37, John Wessels built a sawmill on Black Creek which became one of Crown Point's main economic attractions during its early years. Many local farmers derived their income from these mills and trade with neighboring towns through this route until they closed down in the late 1800s due to changes in transportation technology and competition from more recent mills nearby. Some buildings that remain standing from earlier days include Wessels Mill (built 1835), Mrs. Crouch's House ( Built 1840), Mr. Funk's Store (Built 1840), Gossamer Hall ( Built 1850), Stable/House No 2( Built 1865) & 3(Built 1870). During World War II many local men served our country including Sgt./Lt.(jg.) J M Arnott who enlisted on March 17th 1942 at 4:00 pm while working at Wessels Mill; Pvt./Sgt.(aide) T H Koch who enlisted on December 15th 1944 at 9:00 am while working at Gossamer Hall; Lt./Captain D F Boyle who enlisted on January 25th 1945 at 10:10 pm while working at Stable/House No 3; Capt A B Rankin who enlisted on April 7th 1945 while workign outside his parent’s farm off Vineyard Road just east of town limits; radio operator E F Buchanan Jr.; gunner C S Griggs Jr.; drivers R E Bolton & L K Ziegler all serving with Company H 5th Infantry Regiment “The Big Red One” during World War II . After America’s entry into World War II many local businesses closed because there wasn’t any war production available so most people lost their jobs however some continue to operate today such as Mrs .Jenny’s Bakery which opened back up again in 1984 after being closed for several years before that
