The first settler in Crown Point was John Crouch who arrived in 1814. In 1826, Isaac Waite bought land around present-day Crown Point and started to grow corn and potatoes. He also built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1836, James Hays moved his family from Paducah, Kentucky to Crown Point and started to operate a flour mill on the south side of Center Street. By 1840, most of the residents in Crownpoint had come overland from Ohio or other states across the Mississippi River. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union troops burned down Waite's mill because he refused to give up his production rights for munitions purposes. However, when negotiations resumed two months later and Waite agreed to produce munitions for no pay but with benefits for his employees (known as "whistleblowers"), he again received support from local citizens who set fire to his mill before it could be destroyed. Aftermath of this event saw many crown point residents flee their homes due to fear of retribution by Union forces or possible damage done by Confederate forces occupying LaPorte County at that time. In 1870, Wm Jethro Gibbs founded what would become known as George Washington University in nearby Lafayette based off an offer made by then-Governor David Yarnall while visiting Crown Point that year. The university has since grown into one of Purdue University's largest campuses with more than 49 undergraduate students and 11 graduate students enrolled currently; all located on 10 acres (40 hectares). Later that year settlers near present day Noblesville formed a company called Dearborn & Hiatt Land Company which purchased 8 miles (12 kilometers) east of Crownpoint along Centre Road for $1 per acre ($/hectare).
