Crown Point was one of the early settlements in what is now Indiana. The site of Crown Point was on a bluff overlooking the mouth of the White River, and in 1795, a group of English colonists petitioned for land at this location. In 1814, when the United States acquired Indian Territory, Crown Point became part of that territory. On February 14, 1815, after winning an election by vote from the citizens of Crown Point, General James K. Polk announced to the nation that Indiana would become a state on November 8th that year. The first buildings at Crown Point were built in 1795 by English colonists who had petitioned for land at this location. The town was named after Prince George (later George Washington) because he donated land to its founders. The town quickly grew and began functioning as a commercial center with businesses such as grist mills and tanneries located here. By 1814, it had also developed into a small military post serving as headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant’s forces during his campaigns against Native Americans in what is now Missouri and Illinois. In 1815, following General Polk’s announcement that Indiana would become a state on November 8th that year, Crown Point voted to secede from the United States and join Canada instead due to their dissatisfaction with American policies towards Native Americans. This event is often cited as one of the main motivations for the American Civil War which lasted from 1861-1865. After Union troops captured Fort Dearborn in Detroit on July 23rd 1863, crown point residents took up arms against their captors resulting in several civilian fatalities before finally capitulating on October 15th 1865 within days of its capture without any bloodshed or combat taking place here). Today little remains of Crown Point except for some Picksled Plantation Ruins which still stand today thanks to their popularity among birdwatchers!
