Crown Point is a town in Van Buren County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the West Lafayette– Elkhart, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crown Point is located on the White River and its namesake ( founded in 1792) was King George III's 23rd Regiment of Infantry. The first permanent settler in Crown Point was Nicholas Fenton who arrived on March 11, 1792 with his family from Connecticut. He founded what would become known as Fenton's Landing on the White River near present-day Crown Point. In 1814, Anthony J. Dearborn established Dearbornville some upstream from Crown Point and it became an important trading post during the War of 1812 because it had access to arms and ammunition needed by the war effort upriver. In 1817, Henry Clay moved his family to Crown Point from Mount Pleasant in Morgan County after purchasing land along the White River for $4 per acre ($/acre). From here he began developing what would eventually become one of Indiana's most successful agricultural industries –Clayland Paper Company – which became one of America's leading paper companies until its bankruptcy in 1922. Other local businesses that developed during this time include The Dearborn Hotel (now known as The Butler House), First National Bank (founded 1865), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (founded 1914), and Chrysler Corporation (formed 1933). crown point indiana

Crown Point was a small town inaviity in the early 1800s. It was located on the banks of the Indiana River, about 25 miles northwest of Indianapolis. Crown Point's location at the confluence of two major rivers served as an important transportation hub for settlers and traders who traveled between the eastern andwestern United States. In addition to its position on the river, Crown Point had a strong military presence because it was home to a U.S. Military Academy which taught officers from 1802-1865. The town also hosted annual fairs which attracted attention from all over America. The first residents of Crown Point were farmers who arrived in 1803. By 1806, however, most of the original settlers had left for other parts of central Indiana due to difficult living conditions and competition from new arrivals. In 1816, some local merchants formed a company to build a ferry across the river that would allow travelers convenient access to both Indiana and Illinois products unavailable upriver. The company failed, but this experience led to future development at Crown Point by creating an independent trade community with its own currency and exchange system
Crown Point was founded in 1679 by the Indiana Company. The town was named for the British crown point at St. Mary's Bay on the mouth of the River Patoka, about 10 miles west of present-day Crown Point. The company built a Fort at Crown Point in 1701 and began to explore and trade with other Indian nations. In 1712, the company erected a second Fort at what is now known as Harper's Ferry, Virginia. In 1754, King George II issued an order compelling all English subjects in America to take possession of every post or fort existing in that country before September 1, 1755. This order led to increased traffic on the Great Lakes because Native Americans were not allowed to possess firearms without royal permission. The Crown Point Company became one of the first American companies to establish a fur trade monopoly with First Nations people along the upper Great Lakes region. In 1803, following Antoine de Saint-Pierre's expedition against Detroit (the first successful American attack on European soil), Crown Point became an important port on Lake Erie for goods shipped from what is now Canada and points northward into North America. At its height during this time it had about 100 residents and 20 boats moored at its wharf on Upper Patoka River near present-day East Street/Crownpoint Boulevard in downtown Crownpoint
