It is also one of the fastest-growing towns in Indiana. Crown Point was founded by a group of Englishmen who arrived on May 8, 1788, during the Revolutionary War. Crown Point was originally called Fort Wayne but changed its name to Crown Point because it had become more important as a military base than as a commercial center. The fortification of Crown Point helped to protect Indiana from Indian attacks during the time period when America was under British rule. In 1814, General David Hunter established Fort Wayne as an arsenal and depot for munitions supplies coming into India from Europe. By 1815, crown point had become an important commercial center with its own post office and several stores. Around this time, other settlers began arriving in Crown Point including Germans, Swedes, Irishmen and Americans from Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1827, John Silliman leased land east of present day Crownpoint from Colonel George Wabash for $800 per year to build a mill which would produce flour for local markets and export to Great Britain. The first flour mill in crown point were built by John Silliman’s son-in-law Isaac Lillywhite around 1830-1831; however this mill never worked well due to low water pressure and lack of sails on the hulls necessary for efficient production). In 1835–36 James Lapp purchased 3 acres (1 km2) northeast of present day Crownpoint from John Silliman for $375 per acre (1/4 sq mi). This parcel became known as “Lapp’s Landing” because James Lapp used it as his farmstead until his death in 1865. From here he sent his children away to attend school while he operated his mills which continued up until World War II when they were taken over by Butler Manufacturing Company who produced ammunition using DuPont processes before moving them back into use by Brownell & Ramsey Corporation after that company went bankrupt in 1951 due to changes in technology caused by atomic bombing campaign against Japan.. During World War II, many people came to live near Crownpoint because they could no longer go far enough inland for food or water shortages prevailed throughout much of America during that time period; accordingly there were large numbers of refugees coming into crown point who erected shacks or makeshift shelters outbuildings until permanent homes could be constructed either through donations from individuals or government assistance programs like Famine Relief Act Of 1939 which provided cash grants to families struggling economically during wartime times . The postwar housing boom brought about increased demand for jobs throughout all aspects of community life; Consequently businesses quickly grew larger along with their employees creating new storefronts within what had been onceipheral residential areas overlooking downtown crown point .
