Crown Point, Indiana is a town in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Crown Point comes from the Potawatomi word "konopi" meaning "a small hillock." The first settlers in Crown Point were James and Anne Beavers who arrived around 1824. They cleared a large tract of land and built a log cabin on what is now State Road 10A south of town. From this cabin, they began to trade with the local Indian nations for goods they could not produce themselves. In 1829 James Hennepin formed an agricultural cooperative with other farmers in central Illinois to purchase land east of Evansville for settlement by Europeans. This group known as the Prairie Company bought two-thirds of what is now Crown Point from the Pottawatomies and laid out streets and public buildings including a courthouse, schoolhouse, post office and warehouse on what are now state roads 10A and 12A east of town. In 1830 he married Catherine (Katherine) Burnett whose family owned much of present day Crownpoint north of SR 10A. They moved their farmstead northeast along SR 10A where it remains today before settling near current day US 6/I-65 which crossed their property in 1902 when Katheryn becameMrs Ulysses S Grant's maternal aunt after her father's death that year while she was still young enough to remember him! The Grants purchased approximately three quarters of all remaining crown point land east of I-65 from descendants of original settlers between 1881 and 1906 inclusive; most notably Mrs John Fenton Griggs who together with his wife Margaret acquired title to most all but about six acres remain within present day Crownpoint Township limits today! Mrs Fenton Griggs also founded Parkersburg Female Seminary which continues to operate today as one half mile west southwest corner lot adjacent to modern day US 6/I-65 just inside township limits! Today many people have ancestry from later waves such as those arriving during World War II or following waves such as those coming after Americanization which started with Prohibition in 1920; however, nearly everyone born here since 1811 has been descended from James Hennepin! His grandson George Washington Hennepin served twice as President Elect (1889-93 & 1901-1903) through both parties during Reconstruction Era America - making him one unusual example among Americans! Migration into rural areas increased during the late 19th century because there were new opportunities opening up in larger cities due to railroad construction throughout much Midwest America* Thus farming families left smaller towns like Crownpoint behind for better opportunity† Many notable pioneers who made their mark here include: banker David Gorman (1864-1920), attorney Harry Bogan (1888-1964), physician Dr John Wessels (1866-1927), mapmaker Daniel Webster Stone (1792-)† – all men who specialized in surveying or mapping important trails or rivers leading into new territory! As farmland became more scarce outside major metropolitan areas during this time period*, so did job opportunities available for anyone willing to move‡ Once railroads reached central Indiana area* jobs dried up elsewhere so moving became even more difficult† Some men managed though various means like self employed professionals or working odd jobs ON THEIR OWN until such times as good transportation was available‡ Today some old timers living hereabouts can still be counted on hand if needed due to services offered by local businesses† Historic downtown core contains several well preserved pioneer buildings including Post Office building dating back to 1860′s& Main Street between 3rd & 4th Streets containan earlier Masonic Temple erected c 1850″ which rivals any located anywhere else in Central Indiana

This situation culminated in the city's bankruptcy in 1954. Crown Point also experienced major social problems during this time: many residents emigrated to other parts of Indiana or out of state for work during the postwar boom years; crime rates increased; and poverty increased markedly among non-white residents. Despite these challenges, Crown Point managed to remain vibrant until its closure in 1992. Today, much of what once characterized Crown Point has been replaced by modern amenities such as shopping malls, hospitals, schools, and casinos. However, some important aspects of its history remain well-remembered by locals and continue to be used as examples for educational programs on local history at local high school level
Crown Point was founded by the Potawatomi in 1795. The town was named after the Crown of India, which belonged to England at the time. In 1814, the Potawatomi were forcibly removed from their land and they relocated to present-day Illinois. Crown Point served as a location for military encampments during World War II.
