In 1870 Mr. Stephenson donated land to founded Crown Point Normal School which became one of the largest high schools in Indiana with over 900 students when it opened its doors in 1875 On January 14th 1861 Abraham Lincoln was sworn into office as the 34th President of America at Ford's Theatre within minutes after he entered into an agreement with Simon Gourley to purchase 5 acres (20 mp) northeast of town for $1 per acre (0p). The original plat for Crown Point shows that there were three lots: One lot included land between Main Street and state road 2; another lot ran along state road 2 from land owned by Elijah Thornton to William Hinson; and a third lot included land between Main Street and US-59 which formed what are now Factory Road/State Road 2 . This final parcel lay adjacent to present day Hillcrest Drive/US- 59 . When Abraham Lincoln moved into Ford's Theatre site he ordered local builder Joseph Reichert to start work on a large new home which would serve as both his official palace (the "Albany" complex) and presidential residence during his four term presidency – construction began shortly after he took office on February 15th 1861 Building continued throughout much of the Civil War due mostly to donations from local citizens including lumber dealers Isaac Niles & Nathan Goodall who agreed to supply all Confederate forces with military hardware needed for fortifications such as artillery batteries etc.; also contributing wagons etc.. soon after Union General David Hunter burned down Harper's Ferry with 600 men inside while seeking refuge some residents started rebuilding their homes primarily using native red cedar logs coming from Logansport etc… although many houses still standing today date back to this time period!
