The name Crown Point comes from the phrase "crown of roses" because of its location on the Carp River. The first settlers in Crown Point were farmers and their families who arrived in 1836. They started a small store and post office in what is now the core of the town. In 1840, General David Dixon founded Crown Point Academy which remains one of the leading educational institutions in Crown Point today. In 1853, John Haggerty donated land to make an addition to Crownpoint village and named it after himself. He also donated funds for a school and chapel. The first Brick School House was built on this property in 1854-55 by pupils from nearby Westfield Village (now part of Indianapolis). The first citizens of Crownpoint were men who had bought land east of present day Keystone Heights Boulevard and developed a farmstead there called "Hogsett". This name has been dropped since Hogsett was abandoned during World War II as residents moved to safer areas closer to Fort Wayne or other military installations. In 1865-66, Major James Witherspoon constructed two log homes near present day North College Avenue which became known as Witherspoon's Grove due to his contributions thereto toward building civic amenities within the community including a library, post office, fire department & cemetery There are still some remaining logs from these homes which can be seen on North College Avenue behind Witherspoon's home Museum displays artifacts related to early crown point life
