In 1765, French traders established Fort Duquesne on what is now called Main Street in present-day Crownpoint. French traders also traded with Native Americans at Crownpoint and other areas around this time. When Christianity arrived in America, religious practices among indigenous peoples differed greatly from those practiced by Europeans. Some natives continued traditional beliefs while others adopted Christianity as their faith system. By 1795, about 50% of all Indians living within present-day Indiana had converted to Christianity according to one study conducted by Father Gabriel Dent de la Salle during his missionary efforts throughout North America at that time. It is likely that many Native Americans in central Indiana also accepted Christianity because it seemed like an easier way out than staying with their traditional beliefs which they knew would be endangered if they resisted conversion attempts by Christian missionaries or government officials). In 1837, Captain John crown decided to settle near Fort Wayne (now part of Indianapolis) due to its potential importance as a commercial center due to its strategic location between Lakes Michigan andIndiana; access to both lakes made it an ideal place for shipping goods produced along the Erie Canal and rafted goods down them under cover of darkness or foggy conditions (this practice became known as " canal trade"). crown point became an important stop on travelers' routes northward from Terre Haute through Steuben County into central Indiana; thus becoming known as "the granary city." A store opened soon afterward featuring everything from groceries including canned goods to clothing including hatschetters' gloves which helped reduce hand fatigue while working on farm fields during harvest season; boots were not common then but are now very popular among Apple pie eaters! A post office service operated out of crown point beginning November 1st 1847 until March 3rd 1865 whenmail services moved inland into Indianapolis proper.; mail services returned ashore on October 15th 1870 after being relocated ashore following damage caused by Hurricane Ivan.. During World War I various munitions plants were established within Crownpoint manufacturing explosives such as TNT., shellac powder & cordite (used especially against submarines), Machineguns ammunition & machine tools utilized therein; these plants closed circa 1918 however much equipment still remains extant today & is used recreationally today by enthusiasts visiting various exhibits related thereto (& adjoining Old Town district)... After World War I various businesses reopened but localized traffic decreased leading towards residents moving away mainly for economic reasons...In 1960s many new homes were constructed crossing over Railroad tracks visible from lots surrounding Community...Today little remains except faint reminders thereof although interesting stories abound about what life must have been like back then
