Crawfordsville is a city in and the county seat of Crawford County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is located on the Wabash River and is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is one of two cities in Crawford County that are not included in the Indianapolis–Cleveland–Bartlett Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Crawfordsville were David Crawford and his wife Deborah who arrived from Maryland on May 15, 1814. David was a member of an early settler group that included James Caldwell and John Stephenson. In 1819 David's son George CRAWFORD moved to this area from West Bloomfield Township near Detroit, Michigan with his family. George had married Martha ANN FERGUSON on December 10th, 1819 in Manchester Township (now Henryetta). The Fergussons were pioneer farmers who operated a farm at present day Hope Street/Route 102 east of town. In 1830 George CRAWFORD bought 640 acres (2 square miles) along the Wabash River from Simon HOLLOWAY. This property became known as "The Farm" which still stands today close to downtown Crawfordsville. In 1850 David CRAWFORD sold The Farm to HENRY GREENWOOD for $2,500 cash or 2 horses and 1 wagon worth $25 each which was then considered quite a lot of money at that time! Greenwood started farming there and raised pigs, chickens and cattle until he sold his land to other farmers during the late 1800s when new technology made raising livestock easier than ever before! In 1857 Isaac GREENWOOD purchased land adjoining The Farm for $3 per acre fromDavid CRAWFORD's son George! Isaac Greenwood operated a gristmill here until 1907 when it was taken over by Trenton Manufacturing Company which built its first machine shop here in 1909! After World War I Trenton Manufacturing Company disbanded but their machine shop remains today as Trenton Machine Shop Incorporated! In 1911 Mrs NORA JONES adopted her three children – WILLIAM JONES III (born October 3rd 1906), LINDA JONES (born November 20th 1908), ANDREW MCDANIEL JR.(born February 26th 1912) – into her own home here in Crawfordsville while their father did military service overseas; he would come back home after being discharged and take care of them until they were old enough to go out into society themselves! William Jones III attended local schools through grade nine while Linda Jones attended high school here before going on to receive her undergraduate degree from Purdue University where she worked as an assistant professor for four years before marrying civil engineer Ralph WHITEHALL Jr., also born October 3rd 1906; they have two daughters: KATHarine WHITEHALL born December 14th 1992 (married March 13th 2006 Johnathon Willingham) and Lillie MAY WHITEHALL born September 6th 1995). Andrew Mc Daniels Sr., later nicknamed "The Big Apple" started working for several companies including Ford Motor Company before starting his own truck dealership called McDaniel Trucking Co., Ltd.; it closed down around 2008 but has been revived by current owner Rick Whitehall since 2016 . !!
