Crawfordsville is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located about 20 miles south of the city of Evansville and 10 miles west of the city of Lafayette. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is part of the Evansville–Fayette County, IN-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in Crawfordsville was on the east side of Paint Creek where a post office called "Crawford" was established on December 5, 1837. A Congregational Church and School were built there in 1838 and 1840 respectively. The community grew rapidly due to its location near two major trade routes—the National Road (~which ran through Crawford) and State Road 36 (~which ran through Logansport). By 1860, Crawfordsville had a store, schoolhouse, Methodist church (built in 1861), blacksmith shop (1862), Baptistchurch (1863), Temperance Meeting House (1868), grocery store (1869), hotel (1871), and three churches: one Congregationalist/Methodist, one Presbyterian/Episcopalian, one Episcopal/Roman Catholic. In 1870-71 Crawfordsville had an addition to its school system with a high school which functioned as a feeder for nearby Gratz High School until it merged with that institution in 1965. In 1876-77 an act to establish Pike Township was passed by the Indiana General Assembly; like most early township settlements it was named after Congressman John Cranch who served from 1865 until his death at age 70 years in 1881. As with most early settler movements across central Indiana—made up mostly of farmers looking for new land to farm—councils formed quickly to decide what type of town or village would be founded and what type of infrastructure would be needed such as roads and schools; this resulted in the creation not only of a village but also an establishment plaza comprising blocks bounded by Main Street on the north, Court Avenue on the east, Railroad Avenue on the south, Market Street on the west – all now within present day limits Ofelia Drive crosses these boundaries just east of Court Avenue serving as both center square for Village life & business activity while Park Row runs along RR tracks adjacent to Fayette High School’s Gymnasium providing excellent access into town arterial streetside retail areas extending into multiple directions including downtown core itself!
