Crawfordsville, Indiana is a city located in Hancock County, Indiana. It was founded in 1836 and named for General Francis Crawfords. The population of Crawfordsville was 5,814 at the 2010 census. In 1875, the Indianapolis and Chicago Railroad reached Crawfordsville through a tunnel under the Indiana River. This made Crawfordsville an important town during this time as it became connected to both cities. The first store in Crawfordsville opened its doors in 1876. In 1895, Sweden-born George Hargrave opened his grocery store in Crawfordsville and is considered one of the first small businessmen in Crawfordsville. He helped bring about a new era of business growth in the city and helped to revitalize the downtown area. During this time, Crawford's department store became one of the most popular shopping destinations in town. In 1925, Addison Wagon Works built their plant here and continued to produce heavy vehicles until 1973 when they closed their doors for good. The city has since seen a resurgence with new businesses starting up and many people coming back to live within walking distance of all things cultural!

Crawfordsville is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Lafayette, IN-based Central Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Union Township to the east, Peru to the west, and Clinton Township to the south. The first inhabitants of this area were Native Americans who lived here before European settlers arrived. In 1800, John Crawfords bought 640 acres from David La Salle for $500. He named his new land Crawfordsville after himself and his brother-in-law Michael La Salle. The area became a village in 1825 when it had a population of twenty-one people. By 1830, there were three stores, four blacksmiths, two churches, one schoolhouse and five families living in Crawfordsville. After Ohioan General Anthony Wayne defeated France at Fallen Timbers on July 10th 1795, settlers began arriving from all over America looking for land to settle. Many of them came through what is now Crawfordsville on their way to new homes in western Indiana Territory. Some local residents remember that during those early days many farms were still scattered around like checkerboard pieces on a map because no one could really seem to agree on where they should be situated! In 1837, John Crawfords married Lucy Swartzenden which gave him four children: James (1839 - 1906), Linnie (1841 - 1929), Sarah (1843 - 1945) and Everett (1845 - 1926). On December 15th 1847 at church near today's intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and US Highway 665 Andrew Johnson was inaugurated as President of America following Abraham Lincoln's assassination three weeks earlier in Washington D .C . When Crawford County was formed in 1840 it included most of what are now Lebanon County except for present day Union Township which was organized separately as per charter granted by territorial president William Henry Harrison on January 30th 1846 One significant event that took place during these early years was when wagonloads upon wagonloads of potatoes started coming into town from miles away just before harvest time because then people could sell them directly to farmers instead of having to go buy them at marketplaces later on. It must have been quite an inducement for farmers not only to come into town but also see all the beautiful houses built there while they were still being constructed! A post office was established at Crawfordsville in 1830, and remained open until 1907. The town incorporated as a municipality on March 1, 1905. In 1916, an oil well was drilled near the village and production began within two weeks. As more wells were drilled nearby, crawfish became an important crop for local farmers because they could be easily transported to market by wagon or train. By 1920, crawfish farming had become so prevalent that it attracted attention from larger companies who began buying up all available land to cultivate crawfish beds around the world. Today crawfish farming remains an important industry in Crawfordsville with over 100 farms producing millions of pounds of fresh seafood each month
Crawfordsville was founded in 1786 by John Crawfords. The town served as a small community until 1829, when it became an incorporated village. In 1892, the village moved to its present location, located on the banks of the White River.
