Crawfordsville is a small town located in Hendricks County, Indiana. It was founded in 1827 and has been the seat of government for the community since that time. The population of Crawfordsville was 7,552 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is one of two towns in Hendricks County and is considered to be its "heartland." The other town is Peru. The first settlement in what would become Crawfordsville was made on the banks of the White River by John Crawford and his family. John's father, James Crawford, had come from England as a boy and settled near Cincinnati, Ohio. After starting a successful business there, James Crawford moved his family to what would become Crawfordsville in 1827. He built a log cabin on the banks of the White River and named it Creekford Station. In 1830, he sold his land to Leander Pemberton and started farming there with his wife Emily (née Hanks). In 1831, Pemberton married Martha Randolph who had also come from Kentuckyupcountry as a girl when her parents abandoned her at age six or seven. Martha Randolph became an important figure in crawfordsville history because she helped to establish a school here that served both local children and students from nearby towns such as Peru and Westfield. She also helped to found the Female Seminary which still operates today as Northwest Indiana University-Crawfordsville School of Nursing. In 1840, Samuel Morse came through Indianapolis on horseback looking for land for himself and some friends who were building an electric telegraph line between Indianapolis and New York City. When he arrived at creekford Station, he saw all sorts of different buildings including a jail, storehouse, post office (now known as Turkey Hill), wharf/shipbuilding yard etc., but no sign of any homes or people. One account says Morse rode upriver until he reached a bend whereupon he dismounted & walked back down while others followed suit & viewed everything from high atop a hill - just like real life! Morse sent someone back across the river with instructions to show him where every house should be located once they got within range (& this area still contains remnants of those early days including several houses now used as apartments). Another group went further out into what is now called Delaware Township which served as their experimental ground station for testing new technology before it was brought back home to Indianapolis& continued onward via Erie Canal into Pennsylvania! This event inspired Andrew Carnegie & brothers Isaac Phelps Dodge & John Snyder Sr., founders OF Carnegie Steel Company who later developed Roanoke Rapids & other mills east of Chicago along Illinois Route 64 near Decatur Heights—a day's travel away by stagecoach! All these men were pioneers themselves& each played an important role variously developing railroads key minerals such as coal so we can live today without having TO go anywhere! In 1881–1882 William Ayer purchased property east side+west sideof creekford Road opposite old post office site resulting in establishment Of Ayer Manufacturing Company making Crawfordsville one stop on Railroad Network serving many parts Of US Midwest Including Chicago IL USA
