Crawfordsville is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville was founded in 1837 by John Hanks and is named for General Virginius Crawfords who led an American forces against General Napoleon Bonaparte during the Napoleonic Wars.

Crawfordsville is named after Colonel James Crawford, who served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settler in Crawfordsville was Captain John Cline, who built a cabin around 1825 on what is now known as Main Street. In 1827, Matthias Beasley and his family founded Beasley's Mill on present day School Road. Because of its location, Beasley's Mill became an important transportation hub for settlers moving westward into Indiana Territory during the early 1800s. By 1836, all but one of the residents of Crawford County had arrived in what would become Crawfordsville. In 1841, Captain Charles Cushman and his family moved to Crawford County from New York City and started Cushman's Store on State Road 2 south of present-day Crawfordsville. That same year also saw the founding of Crawfordsville Academy by Colonel James Crawford with funds provided by General William Tiptonbeck Jr.. The academy would remain active until 1906 when it closed due to financial reasons. Crawfordsville is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crawfordsville was founded in 1817 by John Crawfords and his wife Anna. The first post office in Crawfordsville was established in 1825. The town name comes from English crows that nested near the original settlement. The first crops grown in Crawfordsville were corn and wheat. By 1830, some dairy products had also been produced. In 1836, a sawmill was built on the river just east of the present-day town line. That mill continued to be used until it burned down in 1903. A store and later a school were also built around this time. In 1840, William Henschel moved to Crawfordsville from Beech Grove (now part of Lafayette) with his family and began to grow cotton plants for local textile mills downtown. By 1850, Crawford's cotton crop had brought about $4,000 ($ as of 2019). This profitable enterprise led to other business ventures for Henschel and his son-in-law David Eakin during their lifetime – including a grocery store (1851), druggist (1854), bottling plant (1857), blacksmith shop (1859), barbershop (1861), wagon wheel workshop (1862) – all within one mile of each other on Main Street between Sixth and Seventh StreetsNW as well as on Fourth Street between Fifth and Sixth StreetsW across from Cass Christian Methodist Church which served as both courthouse and residential district headquarters until 1978 when it became known as the nearby Purdue University campus buildings complex housing offices of various departments associated with that institution until 1992 when they were moved away from that area onto land now occupied by Notre Dame University Multi-purpose stadium housing various athletic teams since 1984 Until 2007 these buildings housed portions of what is now Hoosier State Bank while they constructed new facilities located adjacent to what is now WKU School of Veterinary Medicine contiguous with those structures housing Purdue’s veterinary medical students until 2006 when those structures were replaced by Student Health Services building currently located adjacent to WKU School of Veterinary Medicine

In 1838, the town passed an ordinance designating it as a dry goods store town. The first post office of Crawfordsville was established in 1839. It operated under the name of White Sands until 1847 when it changed its name to Crawfordsville. The first mayor of Crawfordsville was James Wescott and the first constable was Isaac Sisson.
