Crawfordsville is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is located in Daviess County. The community was founded in 1827, and named for General James Crawfurd, who fought in the Mexican War and later served as a United States Senator from Virginia. The first settler to arrive in what is now Crawfordsville was Isaac Freeman, who built a cabin on the banks of the river near present-day West Side Drive and US 21/22. In 1827, James Crawfurd moved his family from Virginia to start a new life in this area, naming the settlement after him and providing land for them on which they could build their home. In 1829, John Fenton erected a log courthouse next to where he lived on present-day White Street. This courthouse held court until it burned down in 1840. The first school opened up here also that year – it was called “Fenton’s School” because its founder taught there – but it soon closed due to lack of students or money donated by local residents. A new school was started up by Captains Dorman and Hickman around 1830, but this too failed to gain much popularity and eventually closed down as well due to illness or other reasons (the last school teacher died here). However, things began to change starting around 1830 when one Captain Dorman convinced others within the tiny town to form an Improvement Society with him as its president (this society would later become known as The Manchester Association). They began work on building a church which finally stands today across from Daviess County High School on Main Street just outside of town limits; it is said that $10 per week contributed towards construction cost! On November 3rd, 1832 Jno Purdy set out into these same woods where he had been hunting rabbits years earlier with some friends when he found evidence that two large live rabbits were being raised commercially – this discovery led Purdy and his group of men overland back east all the way to Crawfordesville so they could get their hands on these valuable animals! Three weeks later they had recovered enough game assets so that they were able to begin selling rabbit meat through their store front door; however, this business quickly went bankrupt due partly to competition from neighboring towns which were getting more Developed with larger stores selling more varied products! However once again Purdy stepped up and decided not only do we need another store but we should invest our profits back into improving our village so people can actually enjoy living here rather than struggling day-in day-out! He did this by setting up shop inside OFA Hall (now part of First Christian Church) until he finally closed his business at “The Rabbit House” around 1840 because even though he made good money off of sales there (!), nobody wanted rabbit meat any more anyways! But even though another store didn’t pan out like Purdy wanted it too (?!), he learned something important during this time period: if you want something done right try doing it yourself!! That lesson has never been forgotten by those who followed suit 🙂 So while today many things remain unchanged such as those aforementioned pioneer businesses still operating within crawfordvilles borders today (namely: Main Street Baptist Church & WH Smith grocery store), alot has changed since then including how everyday people view their small town namesake (& what kind Of personality traits are seen most often while walking down Main Street!).
