Crawfordsville, Indiana is a small town in southwestern Indiana that was founded in 1854 by John Crawfords. The population of Crawfordsville was 582 as of the 2010 census. In addition to its role as an agricultural center and manufacturing center for optical products, Crawfordsville also has a significant history in the industry of light entertainment. One of the most famous venues in Crawfordsville for light entertainment was the Crawford Opera House which opened in 1896 and played host to a variety of popular shows such as comedians Jack Benny and Harry Houdini. Today, there are few if any remnants of the original Crawford Opera House. However, through restoration work performed by local historians and volunteers, the building is now open to the public as a museum. More importantly, it serves as an important example of how early twentieth century American culture invested importance in theatrical amusements.

In 2000, crawfordvillians voted to add a second high school, Crawfordsville East High School, to the community. In 2006, crawfordvillians also voted to annex the neighboring village of Anamosa into the community for economic reasons but this annexation never took place because Anamosa declined to join forces with Crawfordsville without indemnity agreements that were made between both villages. The main industries within Crawfordsville are agriculture (mainly corn), manufacturing (including textiles and plastics), service businesses (such as restaurants and hotels), and retail stores such as Sears & Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., First National Bank of Indianapolis, IGA Grocery Store/Pantry area, KFC Pizza Place/Bakery area, Dollar General Stores Inc., Walmart Supercenter

In 1840, George Ayer purchased land here and built the first white settlement in what is now Crawfordsville. A mill operated here until it burned down in 1865. After that point, many businesses were established here including a grocery store and two churches. crawfordstowne Baptist Church (founded1867) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded1877). Crawford County was organized on December 3rd, 1876 and by 1907 had a population of over 25,000 people.
