Crawfordsville, Indiana is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is just east of Indianapolis and north of Lafayette. The history of Crawfordesville goes back to 1824 when John Crawfords purchased 640 acres from David Griggs for $5 per acre. The town started as a small log cabin community and grew slowly until it became an agricultural center in the early 1800s. In 1872, Crawfordesville became one of twelve towns in what would become the Terre Haute metropolitan area. With its growing economy and population, Crawfordesville experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and into the 20th century. In 1930, Crawfordesville was made an incorporated village with a population of 1,500 people. By 1990, however, Crawfordesville's population had decreased to under 500 residents due to repeated economic challenges and suburban development within easy driving distance of the village's downtown core. During World War II, many workers who had been employed by General Motors in nearby Muncie were recruited to work on building military facilities in Terre Haute and other parts of central Indiana; this helped spur local businesses to grow quickly during wartime production while also creating new jobs for locals who had not previously worked in these industries. After World War II ended, many manufacturers left Central Indiana for better-paying opportunities elsewhere; this resulted in a decrease in job availability throughout much of rural America but not so much in ruralIndiana where most manufacturing took place before industrial revolution began taking hold thereabouts (Lambert). This decline led to social unrest which often manifested itself as calls for more aggressive anti-immigrant policies or less access to education or affordable housing (Frost). Despite these economic challenges over time that have battered some rural communities such as Crawfordsville specifically since 1945 (Frost), today many residents continue to call their hometown home despite difficult times because they enjoy strong cultural ties with friends and family hereabouts (Mosesberg). Today's Crawfordsville has emerging businesses helping fill old wounds created by factory closings during past decades while also ensuring that everyone has access to basic necessities like healthcare through town government programs like health insurance expansion ordinances enacted recently . Crawfordsville, Indiana is a small town in DeKalb County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is one of the few villages in DeKalb County that does not have a high school. It has two public schools and one private school. The only other large city in DeKalb County is Decatur. The first settlers to Crawfordsville were Jacob and Anna Seward who arrived on July 2, 1827. They were followed by Samuel Sprague on October 11, 1827. They named their village after Colonel John Crawford who died in 1825 while serving as military governor of Louisiana. Colonel Crawford had come to America from England and was involved with the organization of the Illinois Central Railroad. He also served as an officer in the War of 1812 and founded Fort Dearborn near Chicago. No courthouse was built until about 1830 when Justice David Rankin erected a frame building which he used for session purposes until 1840 when he moved to his present home on Elm Street which he purchased from the old landlord Isaac Rice. In 1865 Rankin's grandson Elisha Wistar Rankin donated land north of his house on Third Street for a new courthouse which was completed in 1868 and named for him following his death that year resulting from a hunting accident near Peoria, Illinois Laurence Haskins donated land east of his house (now part of South Side Drive) for what is now called Bellevue Cemetery where several important people including General Winfield Scott are buried including President James Kahlil Gibbons who was born there In 1903 Jno Bogan donated land east of Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue for what is now known as Community School District No 4 Elementary School (now White High School). This property remained undeveloped until it was bought by Mrs.' Clarence Murchison (nee Cullum) in 1954 and renamed crawfordsville High School

The town's first mayor was James Hargrave. In 1831, the first general store was built in Crawfordsville. In 1835, a courthouse and jail were built in Crawfordsville. The town's population grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, and by 1850, it had reached 1,500 people. By 1860, however, the population had decreased to 100 people due to factors such as immigration and cotton production within Indiana; Crawfordesville became a part of Terre Haute County.
