Crawfordsville is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Crawfordsville was made by John Crawfurd and his family in 1786. The original land grant for the town was 1,500 acres (59 km2). In 1811, three brothers named Nicholas, George and Isaac organized a company to build a road from Fort Wayne to Danville on their farm which became known as the Crawfordsville Road. The first post office was established in 1812 and continued until it was discontinued in 1838. In 1827, James Hays founded the Hays Paper Mill here that employed over 100 people for many years making paper products such as cash registers and checks. In 1865-1867, Wm Denny built a sawmill on the site of today's courthouse which produced lumber for buildings and other items until it stopped operations due to wood shortages during World War II. A small grocery store opened here in 1925 before being closed by 1932 when Crawfordsburg's only high school graduated its first class. In 1951-1955, local builders erected 10 new homes on newly developed land east of downtown which has since become known as "The Hill". Today's shopping center includes several dozen businesses including two big box stores - Macy's (1977) and JCPenney (1988).
