The name "Crawfordsville" is thought to be derived from the Cherokee word "kawa'a", meaning "place where water flows." In 1827, John Crawford donated land to the school district. The first building in Crawfordsville was dedicated in 1828. The community began growing rapidly after World War II when many military personnel moved to the area and started their own businesses. Crawfordsville is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville was founded in 1833 and named for the Crawfords family of Pennsylvania. In 1861, it became part of the Uniontown-on-the-Lake Territory during the American Civil War. It was burned by Confederate forces in 1865. The townsite that now occupies most of Crawfordsville was laid out by John Crawford in 1833 as part of a wagon road connecting Indianapolis and Chicago. He named his land after his father, General John Crawford, who fought at Donelson's Ridge and Tecumseh's campaign against British forces near Vincennes in 1812. The first settler to arrive in what is now Crawfordsville was James Bogue on April 15, 1836. By 1840, there were five families living here: Bogue, Waddell, Smith, Rankin and White (Reeves). By 1850 there were twenty families living here: Acker (Ackerman), Bacon (Bacon), Baird (Baird & Company), Belknap (Belknap & Company), Bowman (Bowman Coal Mines Company)and Carleton (Carleton & Company). As more settlers arrived and established their farms around the new town site they began to be called by different initial surnames such as Ackermann(Acker), Baird(Baird&Company), Belknap(Belknaps&Company), Bowman(Bowman Coal Mines Co.), Carleton(Carleton & company) etc., which continued until all but one family left the area between 1870 and 1880 due to lack of water or other resources. One exception to this pattern was David Rankin who settled here from Lebanon Township around 1870 although he initially called himselfRankin & Son until he changed his name to Rankin & Sanford early in 1876 when he built the first house near today's courthouse square.. The Townsite Site located east of present day downtown Crawfordsville along State Road 204 had been surveyed by George Stephenson on July 4th 1830 while surveys were being made for a new route between Indianapolis and Chicago via what are today Delaware County and Hendricks County; westward extension of this route would connect with another surveyor’s plat for “New Salem” also located east of Newark on CR 204/Plymouth Road becoming known as “Crawford Road” later shortened to just "CR 204" throughout much of its history within both Indianapolis proper TN & Butler Counties KY however only CR 204 portions remain extant within contemporary downtown areas including those lying south sideof US Hwy 421 immediately adjacentto I-465 exit ramp leading into Cincinnati OH...
