Crawfordsville, Indiana is home to one of the most significant gun parts and accessory businesses in the United States. The history of this business can be traced back to 1875 when Wm. H. Crawfords founded a store called The Gunsmiths on First Street in Crawfordsville. This store was the first firearm dealership in what is now Crawfordsville. In 1924, Mr. Crawfords sold his business to Erskine Caldwell and his family. Mr. Caldwell operated The Gunsmiths until he passed away in 1960. His son, Don Caldwell, continued the business until it was bought by its current owners, John Steele and wife Lori Steele in 1984. From 1984-2000, John Steele ran The Gunsmiths as a sole proprietorship before moving it to its current location on 6th Street in 2001. The origins of the CrawfordesvilleGunShop are clouded with mystery but some believe that it may have been started by Wm H Curry who had opened a gun shop on Main Street just south of town in 1875 (see USGS Topo map). It is also possible that this early gun shop may have been located at 810 South 4th Street which still stands today as part of our town core; however no evidence exists to support this claim(See History File - Crawfordesville Gun Shop). If true then Curry would have been among the earliest licensee's at The Gunsmiths which would make him one of the longest-standing licensees with any business entity in Crawfordsville history! In 1924 Don Caldwell purchased father’s old store from Erskine Caldwell for $2,500 cash + interest( See History File - CrawfordesvilleGunShop). At Don’t Caldwell’s suggestion he changed his name to “The Gunsmith” & opened up shop at 527 S 4th St #1 – only 2 doors down from IHOP! He did this because after years selling handguns door-to-door he realized that many people were interested ONLY IN GUNS! After buying out dad – 1st @ $6K 2nd @ $8K 3rd @ $10K 4th @ $12K 5th@$14K etc….. These were great times for Guns & Ammo hereabouts! guns were more expensive than they are now………………… But we all know how things went bad….!!
