The Town of Crawfordsville was founded by three brothers who were farmers near present-day Crawfordsville High School: John W., James M., and Michael C.. In 1855, they registered their town site with the Indian Territory Surveyor General under the name "Crawford's Grove". By 1861, they had 1 acre (0.4 km²) of land grant from US President Abraham Lincoln for $100 per year (). In 1865, they had 2 acres (1 km²) more from him for $150 per year (). After being denied access to federal land that lay beyond Evansville proper due to boundary changes mandated by Congress during the Civil War (), these brothers petitioned for and received approval from local authorities to establish aTownship within their Township to provide them with an easier path to marketspace and political power outside of EvansVILLE proper - all while still adhering to certain core values including Christianity (the three men were baptized into Methodist Church services soon after founding their township), independence (John W.'s father ran for Representative from nearby Butler County on multiple occasions before his death at age 73), education (~10% of residents were illiterate when formed; this number has since tripled thanks to school vouchers program implemented by then Mayor Dickey), honesty (~90%) throughout business transactions, gossip (<5%), abstinence (−5%), moderation (−15%) towards alcohol consumption (-50%), simple living (+25%). In 1906, following annexation by neighboring Fort Wayne through an Act of Congress (), Crawfordsville's Township status reverted back to Village status but kept its similar values while becoming part Of Fort Wayne through corresponding legislation (). In 1961, followingGovt cessation (−60% decrease due primarily to military service/duty time exemptions givenzoners during World War II ), Population decreased rapidly (-85%) as citizens left for better paying jobs elsewhere; however majority returned within 10 years +/- 15%. This trend continued until 2000 when Census resultedin significant increase (+240%,+140% due mostlyto high birthrates resulting from earlier exodus). Today’s population stands at 5,181 souls (@2018 estimate). Today’s economy largely depends on agriculture which provides over 95%of employment followed closely by service businesses such as construction & transportation; retail trade also experiencing growth albeit modestly (+2%). Crawfordsville is a small town in central Indiana, located on the banks of the Wabash River. It was founded by English settlers in 1814 and became a center for heavy industry during the early 20th century. The town has since been declining, but it remains an important cultural and economic center in the area. The history of Crawfordsville begins with English settlers who arrived in 1814. They were looking for land to settle after being driven out of their original home in England. The first people to arrive were four men, named James Crawfords, John Crawfords, Thomas Crawfords, and Nicholas Rowe. They set up camp on the bank of the Wabash River and started farming. In about two years they had built a cabin and began trading with other farmers around them. In 1817 James Crawfords married Mary Ann Whitehead; this marriage helped bring new life to the community as Mary Ann had many children from previous relationships. By 1830 there were over 100 people living in Crawfordsville; this number gradually decreased as more and more residents left for better opportunities elsewhere. However, some of these initial pioneers remain buried here today including James Crawford (1814-1892), who is buried alongside his wife at Mount Pleasant Cemetery; John Crawford (1815-1889), who is also buried here; Thomas Crawford (1816-1905), who was killed when he tried to cross the river into Illinois during a winter storm; Nicholas Rowe (1795-1868), one of the original traders in Crawfordtown; and Mary Jane Whitehead (1800-1979). During its early years, crawfordstown consisted mostly of log cabins thatched with trees because there wasn’t enough money to build proper homes until later on in the 19th century when rails came along and transportation became more convenient. Many family members still live here today like my greatgreatgrandmother Sarah Elizabeth Cagle Martin who was born hereabouts 1865 she raised her family until her death 1979 at 86yrs old she lived all thru Decatur County right up till very last year!
