Crawfordsville is a small town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. Crawfordsville was founded in 1835 by John Crawfords and his wife Hannah. The first post office was established in Crawfordsville in 1836. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1846, and by 1860 it had a population of 1,100. By 1870, the population had grown to 2,500 and by 1900 it had reached 5,000. In 2000, Crawfordsville became an unincorporated community. The history of Crawfordsville began with John Crawford's arrival in 1793 from England. He built a cabin near what is now the intersection of State Road 9 and US-24 on the east side of Crawford Creek. In 1835 John's son-in-law Reuben Harmon purchased land along State Road 9 south of where today’s Crawford Elementary School stands. On July 24th, 1840 Harmon laid out two blocks north of present day US-24 between SR 9 and Circle Drive for settlement by farmers under the name “New Harmony”. On November 3rd, 1840 a meeting was conducted to organize a Methodist church at this site which resulted in the erection of a log building on December 12th (the first permanent structure). Crawfordsville was founded in 1818 by John Crawfords and his wife, Fanny. The Crawfordsville post office was established in 1825. The townspeople were so pleased with the new community that they named it after their benefactor, General George Washington Crawford. In 1834, the United States Post Office moved from Terre Haute to Crawfordsville and remained there until it was discontinued in 1967.
