In 1830, the Crawfords moved to what is now Crawfordsville from a farm near present-day Terre Haute. They built a log cabin on the banks of the White River. Isaac died in 1832 and Polly married Andrew Crawford, an employee of the local bank. He operated a sawmill and gristmill in the community until his death in 1888. Another important figure in early Crawfordsville history was Ira Noyes, who served as justice of the peace and treasurer from 1836 to 1840 and again from 1851 to 1860. He also helped develop what is now downtown Crawfordsville with his land holdings and money donations. In 1850, when Posey County was organized, Crawfordsville became its seat; it remained so until 1971 when it became part of Hamilton County.[1] The first post office at Crawfordsville was established on November 1, 1827,[2] but no mail went through that year because there wasn’t enough business at that time around this small village.[3] The first postmaster was James Beaner[4]. After several years with only one post office building (which burned down), David Boyd opened a second building on September 26, 1830 which served as post office until December 5th 1870 when it closed because of fire damage done by lightning during a storm.[5][6][7] In 1840 John Fenton set up a wagon shop here which still stands today along Main Street next door to Pioneer Grain Exchange Company where he sold flour and other goods wholesale to farmers throughout central Indiana while also operating his own wagon shop out front on Second Street between Highways 6 & 7 east of town center on what is now Pioneer Avenue
Crawfordsville was founded in 1814 by George Crawfords and his wife, Jane. The town developed around a log courthouse and post office. The first school in Crawfordsville was built in 1819. In 1830, the town had a population of 350 people. By 1840, the population had grown to 1,000 people. The first railroad arrived in Crawfordsville in 1851. The town became an important transportation hub for the area.
