It lies on the border of Kosciusko County and Hancock County. The name "Crawfordsville" derives from two early settlers, David Crawford and John Crawford. The first settler, David Crawford, arrived in 1798 and named his place after his brother-in-law, Colonel George Crawford of Virginia. The second settleer, John Crawford, arrived in 1802. He named his place after his younger brother-in-law Captain John Caldwell of Kentucky Regiment United States Volunteers during the War for Independence. The original store on Main Street was built by Reverend Prentice Ingersoll around 1820 as a Methodist church school House Schooling Institute (later known as University). After Indian Wars fought by both sides in the late 1800s, most stores closed or converted to other uses such as residences or hotel rooms until it reopened as an general store in 1902 with local manufacturer Samuel Hays providing equipment for its new display case inside the building which still stands today (now part of State Fairgrounds Archeology Museum). It served as a center for trade throughout Kosciusko County until it closed its doors permanently when alcohol prohibition began (the last store to close being Moran's Drug Store just east of town) on November 1st 1911 due to advertising restrictions placed upon small towns like Crawfordsville by Indiana's liquor control board during that time period because they were seen as promoting alcoholism instead of supporting social values such as abstinence from drink - one of many campaigns waged against small towns during this time period attempting to quash any form of cultural dissent). However, even though Prohibition ended over eighty years ago there are still several places in central Indiana where beer remains popular despite bans dating back more than 100 years!
