The first gun factory in Crawfordsville was built in 1840 by Mr. Crawford and it produced pistols, rifles, shotguns, and other firearms. In 1845, the city became the seat of government for Porter County and a new arsenal was built to produce cannons, rifles, pistols, shotguns, and other weaponry. In 1865, the state of Indiana passed an act that made gunslingers required to wear clothing that would identify them as such. This law led to the creation of the Gun Club of Crawfordsville which met monthly at a shooting gallery near downtown for target practice with handguns. From this club grew into what is now known as Chicago Shooting Sports Federation (CSSF). Today, Cummins Incorporated operates four manufacturing plants located in Crawfordsville; one produces ammunition for sporting purposes only; one manufactures handguns; one manufactures revolvers; and two produce sporting goods like fishingtackle and hunting gear.
