In 1868, Captain George Armstrong of Company K 9th Indiana Volunteer Infantry used a Spencer Rifle to shoot down an Indian that had been attacking a white family near this town. It is named for General James Crawford, who helped lead the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settler in Crawfordsville was John Crawford, who arrived in 1836. He and his family built a Log Cabin on what is now known as State Street. A few years later, he married Lucy Witherspoon and they set up a home on what is now Main Street. In 1840, Crawford organized a Methodist Church in Crawfordsville and it became one of the most popular churches in the area. In 1852, he erected another log cabin on what is now Court Road. This cabin served as the town hall until 1906 when it was replaced by a more recent building which still stands today. In 1860, John Crawford Jr died and his son John Crawford III took over management of the church and community affairs. For many years after that,John Crawford III held this title until his death in 1978.
