Crawfordsville is a small town in southern Indiana. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crawfordsville is located on the east bank of the White River, about 12 miles (19 km) south of Terre Haute and 21 miles (33 km) west of Lafayette. The name Crawfordsville derives from English settlers who purchased land here in 1814. The first post office was established here in 1816. In 1847, John Crawfords settled here with his family and began to cultivate corn and other crops. He also built a sawmill and gristmill hereabouts. By 1850, Crawford had become one of the leading landowners in this area; he also owned slaves. In 1860, he became one of seven men appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to serve as commissioners for all Northwestern Indiana; these commissioners were charged with developing local transportation systems and improving public schools within their jurisdiction. In 1870, Crawford married Anna Maria Decker; they raised two children here before moving to Terre Haute in 1872 where Anna Maria died six years later due to tuberculosis contracted while living in Crawfordsville. John continued farming until his death in 1901; his son Herbert then took over the farm operation until 1945 when it passed into the hands of their daughter-in-law Betty Kappecker Browning who continue operations today as Crawford County Historical Society Incorporated (CCHSI). John Crawford's widow AnnaMaria once said: "It would have been impossible for me to stay away from my home town too long - I just loved it there so much." As a result, many aspects of life associated with Crawfordsville are still heavily reliant upon agriculture - including its grocery stores which carry a wide variety of items both fresh and processed; its annual fair which includes agricultural demonstrations/ exhibits featuring various types of livestock; as well as its significant number of historical artifacts that can be seen during regular museum hours or toured during special events such as crawfordfest or apple festival
