Crawfordsville is one of the oldest communities in the state and it has been around since 1824. It was named for General James Crawford, who fought in the War of 1812 and later served as governor of Indiana. The community was first established on a tract of land that now includes most of what is today Crawfordsville. The first settler in this area was John Crawford, who came to this area from Kentucky in 1824. In 1830, John married Anna Maria Wright and they started a farm here. Anna Maria died young however, and John continued to live here until his death in 1854. He bequeathed his home and some land to his wife’s brother-in-law Samuel Laddick, Jr., who built a cabin here on July 4th, 1830. This cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Crawfordsville proper. Laddick also donated all of his lumber used to build many homes in town during its early years. It wasn’t until after the American Civil War that things began to change significantly in Crawfordsville – both physically and mentally! Many soldiers were stationed here during the conflict and their families (and children) helped shape what became known as “the old military town” due to its high concentration of military personnel at various points throughout its history. After Reconstruction ended following the war, many soldiers moved away but their descendants kept alive some core aspects of this culture such as music outbreaks which took place annually at Soldier Field from 1865-1868; local newspapers were also published from this time period; etcetera

During World War I, Crawfordesville served as a military hospital for soldiers from Indiana and Illinois. After the war ended, the population of Crawfordesville declined until it reached 2,500 by 1920. However, during World War II it again increased to 40000 before declining again to 30000 by 1970%. Today there is only a single family home remaining on Main Street which has been vacant for many years
