Today much remains unchanged or nearly so despite changes brought about by suburbanization & industrialization over ensuing decades: For example, many people still call DowntownConnererville home!
The area now known as Connersville was first settled by the Conners family in 1795. The original farmsteads were located on the banks of the White River, about three miles east of present-day Connersville. The early settlers were primarily farmers, but a small number of them also engaged in trade. By 1827, the population had increased to about seventy-five people and by 1841, it had reached one hundred. A large part of the development in this period took place around what is now the town center. A fire destroyed most of the buildings on Main Street in 1847, but downtown was rebuilt within a few months using local materials and labor. This period is generally considered to be Connersville's heyday; business activity remained high until after World War II when growth slowed and poverty became increasingly rampant. Today, there are only a few remaining businesses in downtownConnersville along with significantly reduced cultural opportunities due to its location within an extremely dense urban area. In 1912, John Davenport founded one of Indiana's first grocery stores in downtownConnersville which remains a prominent fixture today. In 1957, Connerstown Savings Bank opened its doors at 501 W Washington Street and continues to operate today as one of Indiana's leading financial institutions. In 1960, First National Bank moved into its current building at 601 S Main Street and has continued to serve as an important player in village life ever since.
