Connersville is a city in and the county seat of Connersville County, Indiana, United States. The population was 21,516 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Connersville was Frenchman François de Charette in 1786. He named it after his birthplace, Connet (Conseil), in Normandy. The town site was platted on March 3, 1806 by John Fenton and James Gentry Jr., two of the original settlers of Connersville Township. The town nameakes its origin from General William Tecumseh Sherman's visit to this area during his 1865–1866 tour of Indiana as military governor of India. Sherman called Connersville "the moral center of our State" because he felt that here people could learn to think for themselves instead of being ruled by government officials who were not always good role models for young men and women. In 1868, a post office was established at Connersville and mail service began operating from Decatur on May 5th, 1868. On October 6th, 1870, the first schoolhouse in present-day CONNERSVILLE opened its doors to students from all over surrounding townships including Bedford & Niles; Albion; Northfield; Griggs; White Sands; Pleasant Plains and more! In 1902 when enrollment reached 2200 students in grades one through twelve with an average daily attendance rate over 50%, the school became known as “1st National” School District No.#2 School #527 – today known as First American International Middle/High School Incorporating grades eleven through twelve! The first post office closed on July 1st 1912 due to high volume demands from residents within our community and other than that we have had no postal services here since then! On November 15, 1812, Connersville was founded by James Conners and his wife Sally. It was named for General John Conners who fought in the War of 1812. The town grew quickly and had a population of around 100 people by 1830. By 1840, the population had grown to over 1,000 people. In 1851, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1907 when it merged with neighboring Evanston into one city.
