In January 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell passed through Connersville on his way to Bardstown to lead an attack against Union forces at Fort Donelson; subsequent reports claim that Ewell stopped short of Innardsville after seeing houses burning there and ordered his troops not to break camp despite heavy casualties sustained by both sides (this event is often incorrectly referred to as "the Battle of Innardsville"). After weeks of back-and-forth skirmishing along various routes within Hamilton County seeing no action or results whatsoever from either side save some minor damage done by Confederate artillery fire upon Union positions near present day Hillcrest Cemetery & Botanical Gardens located just east of downtown Connersville), General Ulysses S Grant ordered all army units converging upon Corinth duelling with cannons outside that city gates; what ensued became known as "the largest battle ever fought on American soil".
