In Connersville, Indiana, optical accessories have been a part of the community for many years. In 1868, a Mr. and Mrs. Hester Conners opened their first store in the town and started selling telescopes and other optical equipment. The first post office in Connersville was established in 1827. In 1861, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Connersville and began construction of its line from Chicago to Indianapolis. The townspeople quickly adapted to life without the railroad and built new infrastructure such as a water tower and a schoolhouse. By 1870, Connersville had become one of the largest towns on the newly constructed railway system. In 1892, an express train derailed near Connerstown killing six people and injured seventy-six others. This event made headlines all over the United States and made it clear that transportation must be improved if America were to maintain its lead in economic development. The city of Indianapolis responded with legislation forcing all local governments within their borders to build expressways so that goods could reach larger markets much faster than they could be shipped by railroads. This type of development not only increased productivity within factories but also created jobs outside of those factories as well; this has led to Connersville being known as "the industrial heartland of America." Despite this boom time, however, there have been several setbacks throughout the years: In 2003, a large fire destroyed many businesses in downtown Connersville; later that year, another fire ripped through a grocery store leaving behind extensive damage; most recently, two earthquakes struck central Indiana causing widespread damage both inside buildings and outside yards across the community. These events have caused some residents to leave their homes for fear of further destruction or loss of life – though overall business has continued to grow steadily since then (though not without hitches).
