Connersville is a city in Connersville Township, Dearborn County, Indiana, United States. The population was 563 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Connersville was John Fenton in 1824. The town was platted in 1827 and named for Nicholas Conners of Connecticut. It became the capital of the Northwest Territory on March 3, 1830, when it was announced by President James K. Polk that Washington D.C. would be the new national capital. In 1836, the state of Indiana granted land to Nicholas Conners for his settlement near present-day Grayslake and it became known as "Nicholas Township". In 1838, conner's sawmill caught fire and destroyed most of town; however, allusion to this event (and others) is still found throughout the community today with a "conner's sawmills" sign out front of many businesses. The townspeople built their own courthouse which still stands today and has been used as part of various government buildings throughout its history including a county courthouse building from 1949 to 1978 and then again from 2001 to 2009; as well as various school districts offices over the years including one during both World Wars I and II before being moved back into storage until 2008 when it reopened as an office park called Gateway Park adjacent to Grayslake High School which had been closed since 1984 due to financial problems with the school district which were ultimately resolved through a bond issue funded by property tax hikes authorized by voters in November 2006 while also cutting library funding levels statewide by $60 million effective January 1st 2007 making Grayslake one of only two schools in Indiana without any lost services due to budget cuts (the other being Westfield Community Schools). As mentioned earlier, Grayslake High School reopened after being closed for many years following its closure during 1984 due to financial problems with local school district; however there are several smaller high schools located within walking distance or less than 10 minutes drive including Ottawa Valley Jr./Sr., North Central Jr./Sr., Southwestern Jr./Sr., White Sands Jr./Sr., Morningside Heights/Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg etc.; each having their own website link below providing more information about each individual school: www.grayslakeisdpvhs1.k12.inflorida.us/.
