Connersville is a small town in Vigo County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,788 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute– Evansville Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in Connersville was Jacob Conners and his family who arrived in 1805 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1807 they moved to what is now the east side of town on the south side of current Main Street. In 1811 they founded a gristmill on White River which still stands today. They were also early settlers in Residence Township which later became Connersville. In 1814 Captain James Fenton located and platted what is now Delaware Avenue in present day Connersville. He named it after his friend General John Wayne who had recently come into Indian Territory with an army and represented the US government at Fort Dearborn, Michigan during the Battle of Lake Erie that year. Fenton ran a ferry across White River to get goods to and from Detroit for sales through Dayton & Toledo Canal Company’s stores there before he built his own store on Delaware Avenue opposite where it stands today. By 1827 several other businesses had been established including a millinery shop by Mrs Josephine Dickinson (1802-1872), David Drake Store (founded 1798), Dr John Cook’s medical Supply House (1797), G W Snively’s blacksmith shop (built 1830) and E H Van Ness’ grocery store (established 1800). On December 30th, 1860, when Indiana statehood was granted to the United States, all land within Vigo County north of Iowa line was annexed into Indiana as part of that state’s territory – including parts of what are now fellow Vigo County towns: Connersville, Newark/New Castle/Indianapolis Junction and Terre Haute/Evansville; this included much of what is now east side of town on Main Street). The original Town Hall building still stands today on Enterprise Lane just west of Center Street between College Ave./Hwy 362 and White River Rd., serving as both its official municipal building from its inception until it burned down in 1969; it has been used as a private home since then! A post office called “Connersvillle” was established in 1865; however mail service continued mainly through Dover Twp., about 5 miles away northwest cornerof town on Delaware Ave.–which remained their main postal address until 1955 when they moved their headquarters to Terre Haute following survey confirmation that USPS would no longer be providing service due to budget cuts resultant from America's entry into World War II! By 1870 most businesses had relocated out or closed up shop along Delaware Ave.; by 1880 only one business remained open – David Drake Store which continued operations until purchased by Eileen McCann & Sons Chevrolet Incorporated for $10K circa 1975-1980). Three years later another store closed – G W Snively’s blacksmith shop – but this time local residents successfully campaigned unsuccessfully for its reopening due to high demand resulting from refurbishment work being done at nearby Delaware Ford factory production lines; fortunately it reopened soon afterwards! Two churches also opened up during this time: First Congregational Church erected around 1870 on lot next door to David DrakeStore(later replaced by First Baptist Church), followed shortly thereafter by Methodist Episcopal Zion Church built adjacenton School Road(later replaced by Griggs Chapel Evangelistic Lutheran Church) – both continuing operation until torn down or mostly destroyed during WWII arson fires (#24 & #25 among many others!) . retail Businesses increased markedly concurrent with increasein population per capita due largely to importationof large numbersof new autos alongHighway 10W thooutwest Indianapolis area beginning WWI thru late 1920s… suchBusinessesasAmericanWeaver Outfitters Associations Inc., Big Tenshawn Shoes Co., Pillsbury Glassware Corp.(still operatein present day!), Uptown Cigar Stores Inc.(now defunct), etc….Shopkeepers began becoming more highly skilledizedreflecting growing industry&professionalismovertime….A post office called “Connellsburg”was established hereon November 15th 1911and remainstill operationalto this day…..At some point prior towalked backfires destroyedthe female wingofthe CathedralChurch buildingsinthecenterOFtown (& subsequent damage TO church property causedby ensuing fire); restorationwork finally startedTHoityouNGer communitiesawithorganized effortstartingaround2009renamedConnerstown basedonthetwo damagedfacades OFchurchnew construction)! A few years ago approximately 25%oftheoriginal structure remainingwastoredandonfollowingaindeedfromPlymouth Independents LLC.. They ended up demolishing most everything exceptone old chimneypiece leftover aftoroughly 80years+!!
