Connersville is a small town located in Elkhart County, Indiana. The population was 6,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkhart, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Connersville was founded on April 15, 1836 by James Conners and his family. In 1916, Connersville was renamed for General George Washington Carver who had been important in its early history. The first post office in Connersville was established on December 3, 1837. The first settler to arrive in Connersville was Jameson Coleman who arrived on October 24, 1838. By 1840 there were nine families living in Connerstown. On July 8, 1841 John Fenton moved to what is now known as the East Side of town and started a gristmill which became the largest flour mill in Elkhart County when it opened its doors on September 1st of that year. On January 5th of 1862 two brothers named Jens and Ole Cederstrom arrived from Denmark with their wagon train bringing over 400 acres (160 hectares) of land to be used for farming purposes near present day Uniontown and they called themselves the "Ceders" after their Danish home village Cederfeldt which they had visited while traveling through that area back in 1861-62. On November 12th 1870 a group of seven farmers from Uniontown organized into a society they called "The Farmers' Association". Their goal was to improve roads and defenses against Indian raids so that more settlers could settle around them rather than have to leave their homes during times of war or epidemics like cholera or yellow fever etc.. When word spread about this new organization several others began joining until within six months there were nearly 100 people involved including thirty five men married off among them! Connersville is an unincorporated community in Connersville Township, Butler County, Indiana. The population was 761 at the 2010 census. It first started as a small frontier settlement named Griggs Landing in 1814. In 1825, it became the county seat of Butler County and remains so today. The community was laid out on March 20, 1828 by John Conners and James Hickey. A post office was established at Griggs Landing on December 12, 1830, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. George Wigger built the first schoolhouse here in 1833-34. In the early 1840s, many families from Kentucky immigrated to Butler County to work on the new railroads being built through that area. Many of these newcomers were farmers who bought land here when they gotready to start theirown farms. After a while though, some of these farmers started building white frame houses around town instead of using log cabins because they thought it looked more respectable thandating logs. One such house is still standing today - it's called "The Old House" and is located east of Main Street near the railroad tracks. It was built about 1840 by John Conners Sr., one of the original settlers hereabouts. The second house also stands - it's called "The New House" and is situated west of Main Street opposite what became known as "TheOld House". By 1850 or 1860 most of the farming families had left for other parts of Indiana or Illinois because there weren't any new railways coming through this area anymore but some people did stay behind to build furnaces for local brickyards and other businesses etcetera etcetera etcetera; meanwhile Griggs Landing gradually lost its importance as a commercial center due to lack of business opportunities elsewhere in Butler County."
