Connersville is a small town in Northwest Indiana, United States. The population was 3,692 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Connersville-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now constitutes Connersville was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The land around present day Connersville was purchased from them by fur traders in 1793. In 1802, Nathan Conner erected the first meeting house in this area and began to sell goods from his store on Main Street. By 1830, there were 11 stores and two churches in what is now Connersville. In 1835, General Andrew Benton and his brigade of soldiers arrived in Indiana to help put down a rebellion against US rule over Mexico. They traveled through Indiana and found numerous Indian villages living peacefully until they reached Connersville. benton ordered all these villages burned except for one which he located and established as the nucleus of what would become known as Benton County. When he returned home after spending three months among the Pawnees, he reported that "the whole nation seemed to be under martial law." This event marks the beginning of an era of military occupation that would last until Mexican independence was attained in 1840 In 1853, conersvillians voted to allow themselves to be annexed into neighboring Defiance County because they felt their situation did not require such a large city asDefiance had with its growing population By 1870, there were 7 business districts with 107 manufacturing establishments employing 2,500 people In 1909-10 local school superintendent J J Donnelly solicited suggestions for new high school facilities which would eventually result in construction of Highland High School which opened its doors on September 15th 1910 The village became self-sufficient with ice cream being sold at street fairs and a post office being open only during summertime
The Connersville area was first settled in the 1800s. At that time, it was a small part of Indiana. The first white men to live in Connersville were Captain Arthur Conner and his family. They started a farm on the east side of town. In 1825, they bought land on the west side of town from Colonel John Evans. They built a log cabin and named their settlement after themselves, Arthur Connerville. The first school in Connersville was founded in 1828 by Mrs. Fenton and Mr. Kirby. It was called the Female Academy and later became known as the High School ofConnersville. In 1835, Captain Arthur Conner donated land to build a courthouse in Connersville.
