By December 8th they had reached Guanajuato (modern-day Mexico City). On January 2nd Columbus set out from Hispaniola with a small crew for what would be his final voyage: a journey all the way to Florida Bay where he intended to find another route across Caribbean Sea so that Europeans could reach Asia by sea rather than having to go throughland...but things didn't go according to plan! After reaching Cuba late January 5th,- barely long enough for them to build boats before winter set in-Columbus detailed four other sailors (- Alonso Avilés y Alvarado de Menendez y Crespo alias Diego Diaz)to continue their journey eastward but never returned...or so we thought! The next year there were reports from Spain indicating that two ships believed lost off Cuba had been found by Portuguese sailors some weeks later but no evidence ever emerged suggesting these vessels were actually those belonging to Columbus or any other member of his expedition...until fairly recently anyway! In 1501 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés discovered an undocumented groupof Amerindians living along Florida’s coast who soon became known as “The Lost Colony” due primarily to misinterpretation stemming from Mateo Ponce de León’s famous report on Ferdinand Magellan’s failed attempt Several hundred additional Spanish colonists also embarked upon various attempts between 1502-1504 without success or discovery leading many contemporary observers – including King Manuel I – erroneously believe that[Columbus] never sailed anywhere near what is nowFlorida…Until quite recently?!!?!?
