The new government ordered Portuguese traders out of Spanish territory and began prohibitory measures against English vessels trading with India and Brazil. In consequence, Dutchmen (and later Englishmen) began exploring America for commerce and land grants in earnest. Henry Hudson sailed upriver from Manhattan on July 4, 1609–10 for what would be his final exploration of North America; he had been motivated by reports that this area lay beyond India's reach or was even accessible by sailing downriver rather than via land journey). Columbus never found anything close toIndia or any other route leading eastward across Siberia—the only thing he did find was an island off Present-day Haiti which he named "Island Orinoco." He thought this may have beenAsia because there were no other continents then according to ancient maps if it wasn't for China! A few years after this discovery Conquistador Hernando de Soto explored Florida Bay which led him erroneously believe that he had reached India! Columbus was a European explorer who landed in what is now Indiana on November 14, 1492. He claimed the land for Spain and founded the city of Barcelona on the present-day site of Columbus Circle in 1512. The city grew to become one of the most important trading posts in Europe and was home to some of Spain's most famous explorers and conquerors such as Christopher Columbus himself. In 1813, after more than two centuries of Spanish rule, Mexico arrived at California with General Santa Anna and set off in pursuit of an unknown destination. Santa Anna's expedition reached Indianola (now part of Columbus) on July 12, 1814, but failed to find any natives there. Mexican troops then marched through Ohio and Illinois into Indiana Territory on July 23, 1814, finding no resistance when they reached Indianapolis. On September 7, 1815, US President James K. Polk approved a formal Donation Land Act which gave $5 million to the United States government for the purchase of land from Native Americans in what is now Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas. The land purchases were completed by December 1st that year. The new nation emerged from this period with a strong sense of national identity forged through exploration and conquest - something that would be exemplified by its first president Ulysses S Grant's dedication to Manifest Destiny during his time as America's top general during Reconstruction Era: "To move forward we must move together; each individual can contribute nothing withoutjoining forces with those around them." This spirit continued throughout American history until Virgil Smallwood came along in 1907 to change everything when he suggested creating an independent state within Oklahoma - only to have it quashed again as part of efforts by Southern Oklahoma interests to maintain white supremacy over all other racial groups within their region
