On October 12, 1795 at a site near present day Newarkville, Washington ordered his army under Lieutenant Colonel John Nicholson to cross overland from Lake Ontario into Canadia on November 7th and take Quebec City without fighting or being repulsed by its defenders By 1800 there were about 350 businesses operating in Columbus with a total payroll for $4 million dollars The residents of Columbus took great pride in their community until 1811 when they joined with other towns around Indiana to form Confederation as part of the United States of America . The town was destroyed by fire but rebuilt within a few years Today Columbus is again proud of its community spirit with events like “Checkered Flag Day” which celebrates American veterans who served our country throughout World War II
