On his third trip across the Atlantic Ocean, Columbus sighted land on July 12th - which is now called San Salvador Island! After landing on this island and exploring it for a while, Columbus made landfall again on Hispaniola (later Puerto Rico) on October 14th - which is now called Haiti! On November 5th,Columbus finally reached America's mainland after a long journey! At first people thought that they were seeing another world because they had never seen anything like it before. But soon enough they realized that this land was not actually part of Europe proper... It was definitely an entirely different continent! It wasn't until much later that Europeans learned about Native Americans living here too - and even then they were mainly raiders who did not maintain any kind of contact with our ancestors back home. Eventually though European diseases started spreading through these areas and eventually all those Native Americans died out too- leaving only a few scattered tribes remaining today who still speak some form of American Indian language(s). All things considered however, Columbus' arrival probably marks one of the most significant moments in human history because without him we may never have heard about America or its many cultures...

The city developed rapidly as a commercial center and became the capital of Indiana in 1816.
