Columbus finally achieved official status as a U.S. city on March 4th, 1814 when President James K.'s Department laid out Indianapolis on what are now Broad Ripple Avenue and Meridian Street near where Fort Harrison once stood (the fort burned down in 1813). At that point, only about 100 people lived within walking distance of downtown Indianapolis - making it one of America's smaller cities at that time! However, growth began rapidly thereafter; by 1830 Indy had become one of the largest cities in America with over 250 residents!
